Homeschool Planning: Learning Competencies and Identifying Learning Gaps

Some mommies have requested that I share on our YouTube channel our homeschool curriculum choices for the Academic Year 2023-2024. Quite frankly, I am still working on our curriculum and may only be able to share our list right about or after the school year has started. I won't be much of a help if that happens. So I have decided to let you in on my journey as we prepare for homeschooling this school year. On the first of my series, I shared on the video the learning competencies that we will be using and the importance of identifying the learning gaps of my students/children.

As you may now know, we will no longer homeschool our firstborn who is now entering highschool. Our two younger kids who are incoming Grade 1 and Grade 3 students will be homeschooled using an open curriculum. Both kids are enrolled under the Home Education Program (HEP) of Peniel Integrated Christian Academy of Rizal

Learning Competencies

Mommy Kat, ano ba yung learning competencies na yan?

Learning competencies are the knowledge, skills, and behavior that is expected of the learner to exhibit after the learning activity or lesson has happened.

LOL!

It is important for us to align our lessons with the learning competencies that we want for our homeschool. This would help us identify which ones we will be using as materials and activities to reach our goals.

This coming school year, we will be using the DepEd MELC (Most Essential Learning Competencies) as our basic learning competencies. Since we will be adopting an open curriculum, we will be adding competencies that are not listed in DepEd's MELC.

Learning Gaps

Usually after a school year, I mentally note or put in bullet points the topics or lessons our kids had struggle with from the previous school year.

It is important that we identify the learning gaps in our children in order for us to address those gaps. We take into consideration these learning gaps when we create activities and lessons during school breaks and the regular school year.

Abangan ang next video ko for updates on our homeschool planning.
