At SM Supermalls, sustainability goes beyond a single day—it’s a daily commitment to making life better for people and the planet. This Earth Day 2025, SM is inviting everyone to be part of simple, everyday actions that can create lasting environmental impact.
“Our malls are more than places to shop—they’re spaces where both communities and nature can thrive,” shares Engr. Liza Silerio, SM Supermalls’ Vice President for Corporate Compliance and Program Director for SM Cares on Environment. “Through accessible programs and eco-friendly features, we make it easy for everyone to join the movement toward a more sustainable future.”
Here are 7 ways SM is bringing green living closer to home—and how you can get involved:
1. Charge Your EV for Free
SM offers 123 free electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in 69 malls—powering over 14,500 kWh of clean energy and growing. With 50 more stations planned for 2025, SM is helping make low-emission travel more accessible to all.

2. Walk Through Solar-Powered Spaces
With solar panels installed in 47 properties, SM generated over 27.6 GWh of renewable energy in 2024. This clean energy output is equal to taking 4,100 cars off the road! The goal? Reach 100MWp in rooftop solar by 2027.

3. Enjoy Naturally Bright, Energy-Saving Spaces
SM malls use skylights, Sky Gardens, LED lights, and motion-sensor escalators to conserve electricity and reduce carbon emissions—while still keeping spaces bright, safe, and welcoming.

4. Help Build a Waste-Free Future
Through the #SMWasteFreeFuture campaign, proper waste segregation using RDC (Recyclable, Disposable, Compostable) bins is now the norm across all mall tenants—and even among SM employees. Change truly begins from within!

5. Join the Monthly Trash-to-Cash Market
Every first Friday and Saturday, bring in recyclables like plastic, paper, metal, or appliances and exchange them for cash. Over 1 million kilograms of waste are collected annually at SM malls through this program.

6. Drop Off Plastics and E-Waste Responsibly
Participating malls have plastic drop-off points, while Cyberzone areas feature e-waste bins. Thanks to strong partnerships, SM has already kept 63,874 kg of plastic and 11,000 kg of e-waste out of landfills.

7. Be Part of Coastal Cleanups
In 2024 alone, over 27,000 volunteers helped SM collect more than 157,000 kg of trash from coastlines and waterways. Ongoing cleanups show the power of communities working together for a cleaner future.
