Smart Parenting Workshop: The First Year of Life

SmartParenting.com.ph, the credible parenting resource backed by experts and a community of involved parents, recently held the last installment of “Smart Parenting Mom Workshops 3: The First Year of Life” on November 13, Sunday, at Discovery Suites in Ortigas. While the equally successful previous legs of the workshop were about raising toddlers and school-age kids, this workshop focused on the first year of life, and SmartParenting.com.ph tapped three experts to share their insights to guide parents on how to navigate their baby’s first year.

Together with me in this workshop is our 15-month-old toddler. Even though I'm a mom of 2 kids (soon to be 3!), I make sure that I attend workshops like this to learn more about parenting. I am still learning every single day!

We strive to make it our daily mission to help parents raise a child who is curious, independent and resilient. It’s a tough job! So we hope workshops like this will give them answers and complement their own parenting style,” said Leah Nemil-San Jose, Smart Parenting’s editor in chief.

Dra. Jamie Isip-Cumpas, a lactation consultant and member of the Breastfeeding Committee of the Philippine Pediatric Society, tackled feeding tips and essentials, breast feeding and breast pumping. Her talk gave light to the benefits of breastfeeding both for mothers and babies, as well as knowing the best time to start weaning.

I also asked Dra if I should start weaning my toddler now that I am pregnant with Baby #3. She said that it really depends on what my OB would recommend. Some women have sensitive cases and would need to stop breastfeeding their child while pregnant. Since my OB gave me a go-signal to continue breastfeeding, my journey in breastfeeding Z is not yet over. :)

Another speaker at the event was Dra. Roselyn Balita, owner of Little Lamb’s Pediatric Wellness and a professional infant massage instructor. She discussed the importance and benefits of infant massage and demonstrated on how to massage a baby.

I learned through Dra that we shouldn't be using manzanilla on our babies. Hala! I've been using it on them for years! Better to use natural oils

Here's the live facebook feed of the demo. (P.S. There I am, standing in the crowd carrying a sleeping Baby Z and trying to video the demo.)

Capping of the talks was a final talk from my friend Quennie Sullano-Gavan, a baby sign language instructor and owner of Baby Talking Hands. Que discussed further ways to communicate with baby before they can talk and how to teach them the signs.

Our family can attest to the benefits of baby sign language with our kids. If you haven't started signing with your baby, you should start now.
