Book Review | The Philippines: A Visual Journey

I've been planning to add geography and culture to our kindergarten homeschool curriculum this school year but haven't laid out the topics. While we were waiting for the geography workbook we ordered from the US, I was blessed to be chosen as one of the bloggers to review books by Tuttle Publishing. It was perfect timing because I was looking for books that will accompany our geography workbook. And I was particularly looking for books on travel and culture.

One of the books I reviewed (other books to be reviewed soon) is the beautiful travel book, The Philippines A Visual Journey by Elizabeth V. Reyes.
We wanted to introduce to our 5-year-old son the beauty of our country and our rich culture without dumping him too much information. He has travelled twice to Boracay a few years ago and once to Batangas and Tagaytay. However we haven't travelled outside of Metro Manila for 2 years now and he's been very interested to places outside the city. He knows that I've been to many places around the Philippines and he wanted to see where I've been to. So a visual journey around the country is the best approach for our kindergartener.

First Impressions

We were really impressed with the quality of the paper and the photos used to capture the Filipinos, landscapes, and the culture. My son immediately wanted us to discuss the book right there and then when we first opened it. The book has over 150 photos and we enjoyed browsing through them. My son enjoyed flipping through the pages and wanted to go to almost all of the places he saw in the book.

The book is divided into 17 chapters: Manila by the bay, Boracay, the Palawan archipelago, Music & Dance, to name a few.

Lasting Impressions
Truly a visual journey around the country is what this book offers. There's not much text written that it gives the reader a chance to focus on the beauty of the photos. Short facts to complement the photos were available on each page.

I believe this book is a great gift to someone who has never been to the Philippines and would like to know more about the beauty and culture of the country. It gives a short course on what to expect when visiting the Philippines -  from places to go, food, local crafts, music, weather, and the genuine smile and hospitality of the Filipinos. It's also a great book for every Filipino who'd like to revisit and tour the country in one sitting.
